Touch and Count

Touch and Count

In Kindergarten, children will be asked to demonstrate when counting objects, to say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.

Kindergarteners will also be asked to understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.

Did you know that pointing as you count is a valuable tool for your preschooler and will help them with Kindergarten readiness?

When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.

Grey was already exploring with his trains and connecting them.

We used this opportunity to point and count to demonstrate pairing objects with each number.

We also rearranged the trains to show that the total amount of trains remained the same, regardless of the order.
