Tricks on Choices
What's in Your Snack Draw?
Toddlers love choices, and it is important for them to make "good" choices as often as possible. Give them opportunities to make healthy choices.
Preschoolers will eat what you buy. If you would rather them not eat something, do not buy it.
Remember that your toddler is also watching what you eat.
We cannot expect them to make healthy choices if we are not making them as well. The other day I was eating a veggie burger, beet saurkraut, and avocado. These are NOT every day items for Grey. However, we sat down together and he wanted a bite. This bite lead to other bites, and he eventually finished my lunch. The entire time I pretended to be "upset" that he was eating my lunch, but inside I was so excited for him to get in his healthy fats and probiotic foods!
Here is Grey's snack drawer. This morning I quietly added three apples. Next thing I know, he comes around the corner with...an apple! It was HIS choice!
If you store only the things you want your children to eat, then they will only eat the things you want them to!
Here is another trick. Instead of asking Grey if he wanted peppers, I stuck out my hand and said, "Red or yellow?".
Remember, Grey is a preschooler just like your child!
Every day has its challenges and I never know if my food suggestions will be a yes, or a crying fest. Keep at it and you too will be able to sneak in your healthy food items more than you would think possible!
