Pinecone Pick up to Expand Vocabulary
By Kindergarten, children will be asked to participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
Begin exploring this idea by getting your preschooler outdoors to examine nature! This activity will expand your preschoolers vocabulary and engage their senses.
First, we grabbed a basket. (That we had just purchased from Goodwill for $4!) This basket was a good choice for my preschooler because of the handles. He took pride and ownership in being able to carry it around.
Preschoolers enjoy transporting, filling, and dumping objects in and out of baskets. Don't let the dumping discourage you! It will get refilled.
Next, we examined the pinecone and determined if it was big, small, sharp, dull, or squishy.
This conversation helps develop vocabulary and adds new adjectives to your preschooler's lexicon.
Once your pinecones are in your basket you can:
- compare and contrast pinecone sizes
- count them
- put them in pairs of two
- paint with them (be careful, some pinecones can be sharp!)
- discuss how many more pinecones may fit into the basket
- demonstrate how weight changes with and without pinecones in basket
