Domino Addition Track

Have a child ready to add? Try this domino addition track!

I know my rising Kindergartener is ready to add because he is beginning to automatically recognize “groups of” numbers.

This means he sees a group of four dots and automatically recognizes it as a group of four.

I know my newly four year old is not ready because he is still understanding that the number five actually means FIVE objects.

Even when you think your child has this down, I urge you to keep at it.

Number sense and truly understanding quantity is the foundation of all future math concepts.

Do not rush to addition.

I urge you to take the time touching and counting manipulatives prior addition. The counting bears, pom poms, and magnetic tiles are great tools for this!

So now after that PSA, let’s dive in!

Looking to introduce some key math concepts?

You know me. I am always thinking of ways to introduce those Common Core Math Standards now so when we all enter Kindergarten, it is a lot more head nodding than confusion.

I’ve been there. I’ve taught these standards. I assure you, they move FAST.

Here, I know that Kindergarteners will be asked to understand the terms match and pair. They are also asked to, directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common.

“You have a pair of socks. They are both the same.”

“These two stickers are alike because they both have 2 candy canes and a snowflake.”

“These objects are different because one of them roll and the other will stack. They are not the same.”

We can begin to introduce Kindergarten topics in an age appropriate way that is enjoyable.

Shapes; one of the most fun ways to watch your preschooler's development unfold. 

Working with shapes will begin with shape identification, develop into spatial awareness, and continue on to understanding how shapes fit together in our world. 

Why Manipulate Shapes Now? 

By Kindergarten, children will be asked to:

  • Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.

  • Model shapes in the world by building shapes from components (e.g., sticks and clay balls) and drawing shapes.

You do not have to master this in Preschool, but this is a FUN way to begin the introduction now.
